Andrew G. Forrest Paintings
I was born in Hertford in 1947. At St.
Paul's Cathedral Choir School, I was inspired by the art teacher Eileen
Jessop Price - a renowned artist in her own right who had studied at the
Slade. In the 1960s at Ardingly College I was given further
encouragement by Head of Art Ernest Constable.
I hold a BA Hons in Social Anthropology
(University of Sussex) and MA in History from Birkbeck College,
University of London. Formerly Head of History at Woking Sixth Form
College, where I also taught History of Art, I have retired from
teaching and am now able to concentrate on painting - a subject on
which I also write. My publications include Van Gogh: A
Beginner's Guide (Hodder and Stoughton, 2002; Random House-JoongAng
2005 - Korean translation). I have also lectured on art, including
Paris in the 1890s: Art and History, which examined the
artists of Paris in their wider political and social context. Such
historical background informs some of my painting.
In the 1980s, I exhibited and sold some
of my paintings at The Reid Gallery in Guildford and Milford, Surrey
(the gallery-owner's grandfather, Alexander Reid, had known Van
Gogh), and in the 1990s exhibited and sold work in London at 'Not
the Royal Academy' (Llewellyn Alexander Gallery).
As an artist, my sources of inspiration
are rural and urban landscapes, especially timeless villages and
towns projecting ancient memories in light and shade, and vibrant
city streets at night. My principal medium at present is acrylic,
though I also paint in watercolour and enjoy drawing, mainly using a
4 or 5B pencil which permits a wide range of tones whilst retaining
a precise line. I like engaging closely with line and colour, the
challenge and excitement of mixing colour on the palette yet
deploying combined pure colours with the brush. Sometimes I favour
the explicit combination of colour and line, as with Avignon:
from the Palais des Papes, and A Letter from Vincent van
Gogh. As with the latter example, my work might tell a story.
A Letter from Vincent... shows the courtyard of 54, rue
Lepic, Montmartre, Paris, which had been Van Gogh's residence in
1886-88. My painting shows a letter having arrived from Vincent -
now living in Arles in the South of France - to his brother Theo,
who was an art dealer.
Since the late 1970s, I have sold over
300 of my paintings. I am very happy to undertake commissions, and
some of my work is available as archive quality prints and greetings
cards. I am a member of the Society of Eastbourne Artists and remain
a member of other art societies, including the Weybridge Local
Artists group and Woking Society of Arts. I am participating in the
Artists Open Houses aspect of the Eastbourne Festival and hopefully
in Gallery North's Spring Exhibition.
