commissioning an artist

Some of the artists whose work is shown here are interested in working for customers requiring commissioned work.

Often a customer will see work that he, or she likes, but has special requirements, usually associated with the size of the work, or the colours needed to enhance the existing features within a building.

Sometimes and artist will be asked to create a series of works which reflect a particular theme.

Before starting a commissioned piece the artist needs to discuss the project with the customer and reach a detailed understanding of what is required. Once a customer's requirements are known the artist can say whether, or not, he or she, feels capable of producing the work that is needed.

Please note that, other than the extra costs incurred by incidental expenses, ie; travel costs, etc., a commissioned work of art need not cost more than the work that an artist would normally produce for sale.

You need to discuss terms with each artist but, for guidance, some of the usual terms for commissioning a piece of art are as follows.

1. In certain circumstances customers may be asked to contribute toward the artists travel and accommodation expenses incurred on visits to discuss the artwork, visit the projected building or meet with designers or architects. This would normally only apply if the prospective project entailed the artist travelling a significant distance to visit the customer or site.

2. Once the artist has been accepted and briefed and a fee has been agreed, a 50% deposit is payable in advance. Once the artwork has been produced this deposit is non-returnable, even in the unlikely event that the final artwork is rejected.

3. The client usually agrees to pay for transportation of the work, and for work to be insured while in transit (please note that you should expect fees will be charged at cost prices).

4. If the artist is VAT registered artwork is subject to Value Added Tax (within Europe), and may be subject to state or national taxes, in other regions. These taxes are payable by the purchaser.
