L. S. Lowry's depictions of the industrial north of England with it's canals, cotton mills, factories and streets make him one of the most unusual and best loved of British artists. Born in Manchester, Lowry spent much of his life as a clerk, only painting the scenes he saw around him as a hobby. However, in 1939, when Lowry was in his fifties, his work was finally discovered and exhibited to the public. Lowry was self taught, and his style remained raw and entirely unique, as he was completely uninfluenced by the French Post-Impressionists who were his contemporaries.
