Originally from Russia, artist Mark Rothko emigrated to Oregon in America and later to New York where he studied fine art and painting under Joseph Albers, becoming one of the worlds most renowned Abstract Expressionist painters. Instead of looking at colour and form like other painters, Mark Rothko wished to use colour to express raw human emotion. His paintings have been described as 'ethereal' and 'magical', and his work does have a meditative quality. He said 'I paint large pictures because I want to create a state of intimacy. A large picture is an immediate transaction; it takes you into it'. Rothko's paintings were initially full of bright pink, yellows and orange hues, but as he battled with depression, be began to use greys, browns and finally blacks, before committing suicide in 1970.
