Mackenzie Thorpe Biography The British artist Mackenzie Thorpe has, from his humble beginnings in an industrial town in the North of England become one of England's best loved artists. Mackenzie battled dyslexia throughout his childhood, at a time when it was not a recognised condition, and because of this suffered bullying from both his teachers and peers. However, it was during this time that Mackenzie Thorpe discovered his love of drawing and painting, finding inspiration in the works of Vincent Van Gogh and Mark Rothko. He went on to attend the Byam Shaw Art College in London, where he developed his distinctive style. Thorpe moved back to his native Northern England, where he continued to work as an artist, ultimately becoming a household name. Every exhibition he has had in the past few years has sold out instantaneously, and prices for his sculptures, original paintings and Limited Edition artworks have rocketed. Happily, the open edition Thorpe prints on our website are well within most budgets! Thorpe's paintings often centre around the recurring themes of love, as in his popular work The Lovers (seen below) life, friendships and the innocence of childhood. As the eldest of seven, and now a father of two, family is one of Mackenzie's favourite themes, as seen in his latest series of works illustrating parenthood (see The Family, and First Day in a New World). In fact, his own children, Owen and Chloe and their pets often appear in his art works. However, it's not all sweetness and light in Mackenzie's art. A darker side of life is portrayed in some of his paintings, as he portrays the ups and downs of a working class existence in Northern England. Recurring symbols are used throughout Thorpe's work, with large feet alluding to his down to earth working class upbringing and shepherds symbolising parents watching over their flock. The children in many of his pictures have large heads - filled with imagination, love and happiness, not yet deflated by life's harsh realities. His simplistic forms and bold use of colour are perhaps a result of Mark Rothko's influence on Mackenzie, who was enthralled by his work. Today, Mackenzie Thorpe has made his home in the North Yorkshire dales, and spends his days painting in the window of his shop. Mackenzie Thorpe's artworks have captured the hearts and imagination of a nation, with his unpretentious approach to art and charmingly simple images of the familiar. |
