Artist Tamara de Lempicka was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1898, into a wealthy family. Her childhood is not well documented, but at the age of 18, Tamara married the Russian Lawyer Tadeusz Lempicki, before fleeing to France with their one year old daughter to escape the Russian Revolution in 1918. In Paris de Lempicka studied painting, and swiftly became one of the most sought after society painters. De Lempicka became famed for her distinctive and elegant portrait paintings which combined the simple, geometric forms of cubism with a chic Art Deco style. Her models were writers, actresses, her husband and lovers (both male and female), and she gained a reputation for her beauty, parties and scandalous love affairs. In 1939 Tamara remarried and emigrated again to America, where her success was repeated in New York. There has been a revived interest in her work due to the recent Tamara de Lempicka exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Many of the paintings seen in the exhibition can be found below, including 'Saint Moritz', 'Adam et Eve' and 'Portrait of a Young Girl in a Green Dress' poster. Both Madonna and Barbara Streisand are collectors of her work
