Miro was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1893. Along with Salvador Dali, Joan Miro became a leading member of the Surrealist Movement which originated in France in the 1920's. He was a versatile artist, producing paintings, lithographs, ceramics and etchings, as well as working alongside Max Ernst on the set designs for Diaghilev's ballet 'Romeo and Juliet'. Surrealism revolved around the concept of creating art in the same manner as one would a doodle, spontaneously, with no conscious forethought. He became best known for his paintings of abstract magical creatures and bright primary colours often using a brush attached to the end of a long stick.
