Originally a watercolour painting on paper, 'Caravans' was painted by Ravilious in 1936. The scene depicts two 'Fever Wagons', first used for the treatment of ill soldiers in the Boer War before being shipped back to the Sussex farm 'Furlongs'. They were purchased by Eric's friend Peggy Angus and he converted them into a studio and living quarters.
