Jack Vettriano was a self-taught Scottish painter and a prominent figure in the British contemporary art scene. ‘The Billy Boys’ is one of Vettriano’s most famous paintings depicting four men dressed in suits walking along a beach at sunset. The composition was inspired by a poster designed for Quintin Tarantino’s 1992 American crime drama ‘Reservoir Dogs’. The title of the piece however ties in with Vettriano's Scottish roots as 'Billy Boys' is a loyalist song from Glasgow that originated in the 1920s and is often associated with the long-running religious divide between Protestants and Catholics in the city.
